The most-cited evidence for sauna detox is Genuis et al. (2011), a small study of 20 participants that found 18 metals — including lead, arsenic, and mercury — present in sweat samples. It’s a real finding, and it’s the number most sauna-detox marketing traces back to. The catch: researchers reviewing the study later flagged that the sweat samples were collected by scraping the skin, a method that mixes in sebum (skin oil) along with sweat. Sebum can bind and concentrate certain compounds, which artificially inflates what looks like a “toxin removed via sweat” reading. The metals are genuinely present — the question is whether scraped-sample sweat testing overstates how much your body is actually clearing that way.
The cleaner comparison: sweat vs. urine
A better-designed study, Porucznik et al. (2015), sidesteps the scraping problem by comparing two collection methods directly. Researchers measured BPA (a common plastics chemical) in both urine and sweat-patch samples from the same participants.
